Have you ever found the words you use or draw upon, lack the ability to convey your experiences, your sensitivities, your emotions, your thoughts, your beliefs, and your story?
Perhaps, you are like many people I connect with:
noticing a lack of substance in words,
having difficulty in accessing words,
sick of the verbal diarrhoea that keeps you looping in dis-ease,
struggling to communicate boundaries, or facing challenges in communicating the depths of your heart.
Did you know that when I was a little girl I used to read the dictionary for fun?
I thought that if I just KNEW the definitions of words, what they looked like letter by letter, how to string them together properly, that I would be able to make sense of this home, this family, this body, these dreams, these visions, these sensitivities and the meaning of this life...
You know just the small stuff
The first workshop series I ever made was a therapeutic writing experience...playing with written language creatively, without filtering, symbolically involves the heart and is readily accessible and beneficial -- hello, morning pages!! IFYKYK
But, after you've been turned inside out, lost a loved one, grappled with the inconceivable, been abused and dominated expressive arts can EFFORTLESSLY, step in as a vehicle to move beyond words...
Through bodily movement, abstraction, colours, textures, patterns and your creative energy in flow state you can stop trying to find something, be someone, seek meaning in chaos, long for truth, run from fears and worries, hide away, or have it all figured out.
It gives you freedom to shift it all out from within you till you find inner stillness and in full absorption with the nothingness...strangely, connection.
Expressive arts is an experience that involves an invitation to be witnessed, to gather support and lean into prompts and IN-queries with your active participation.
It usually isn't...
- making pretty pictures
- the next Mona Lisa
- step-by-step instructions
- technical art methods
- having a certain outcome
- knowing how to make "art"
- what you learnt in lessons at high school
Arts saves people's lives.
Arts supports mental health.
Arts is a Spiritual act.
Arts is empowering.
Arts heal.
